What Porchlight does
We check email addresses against a database of known data breaches, tell you in plain language what turned up, and send a weekly summary. We give the person being protected their own simple page showing what is being watched and a way to stop it.
What Porchlight does not do
This list is shorter than what larger services advertise, and we would rather you knew before paying than after.
- We do not stop investment or cryptocurrency fraud. This is where the most money is actually lost, and software does not prevent it. Talking about it as a family might.
- We do not screen, record, or block phone calls.
- We do not reverse payments someone chose to make.
- We do not monitor credit and we do not provide identity insurance.
- We cannot tell you that someone is safe. We can tell you what we found.
Who may be monitored
You may only ask us to watch an address whose owner has agreed. You may confirm on their behalf that they agreed in person, and if you do, we will still write to that address to say so and to offer a way to stop. Do not use Porchlight to monitor someone who has not agreed, or who has told you to stop.
Stopping
The person being protected can stop monitoring at any time, from a link in any message we have sent them, without an account and without asking the account holder. This takes effect immediately and we will not override it.
Things the account holder will not be shown
Some breaches are marked sensitive — dating, adult, and specific-community sites. We never show these to the account holder, and they are left out of alert counts and the weekly email. They are shown only to the person whose address it is, if they confirmed that address themselves. This means your alert count can be lower than what we found. We are telling you before you subscribe.
Billing
Subscriptions are $12 per month or $99 per year. We email you seven days before an annual renewal. You can cancel at any time and keep what you have paid for until the end of that period. If a payment fails we keep checking while the card is retried, rather than stopping without telling you.
If a subscription lapses, we stop checking and say so plainly on both the family dashboard and the protected person's own page. We do not leave anyone believing they are protected when they are not.
No warranty
Porchlight is provided as is. A breach database only knows about breaches that have been discovered and published, so an address with nothing against it has not been shown to be safe — only that nothing is known. Do not rely on Porchlight as your only protection.
